Two documentary films were screened in this special collaboration with Asian and Asian American Studies and Asian Pacific Student Services. The screening was followed by a discussion featuring dancer, songwriter, and activist Nobuko Miyamoto and directors Tadashi Nakamura and Tarabu Betserai Kirkland. Diego Gonzalez, a first-year dual major in film and television production and Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, served as the moderator.
“Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement (2024) A documentary following the life of visionary musician, dancer and activist Nobuko Miyamoto. Featuring rare archival footage, the films tells the story of a changing community through one of its most beloved storytellers as she reflects on decades of groundbreaking cultural work and a life that has bridged coasts, industries, families and history.
"100 Years from Mississippi" (2021) This documentary film follows Mamie Lang Kirkland, a 107-year-old woman who bravely returns to her hometown to confront the trauma of racial violence and share her firsthand experience of surviving a lynching attempt in Mississippi. Directed by her son, Tarabu Betserai Kirkland, this deeply moving film sheds light on America’s history of racial terror and resilience.

"Your Name"
The Center for Asian Business and Asian American Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Faculty Staff Association presented a screening of “Your Name” (2016), a Japanese animated romantic fantasy film about high school students Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu who suddenly begin swapping bodies despite having never met, unleashing chaos on each other's lives. The film was inspired by the frequency of natural disasters in Japan.

"Memories of Murder"
The Center for Asian Business and Korean American Student Association (KASA) present a screening of “Memories of Murder” (2003), a neo-noir crime thriller directed by Academy Award winner Bong Joon-ho. In the film based on a true story, detectives Park Doo-man and Seo Tae-yoon lead an investigation into a string of crimes taking place in a small province in 1980s South Korea.
