"Howl's Moving Castle" 

From the acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, this film is the story of an unconfident young woman who is cursed by a spiteful witch, and her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions.

A screening, followed by a discussion featuring Curtiss Takada Rooks, assistant professor of Asian and Asian and Asian American Studies, was led by the Nikkei Student Union. "A Taxi Driver" (2017)

Set in 1980, this is the true story of a down-on-his-luck taxi driver from Seoul who is hired by a foreign journalist who wants to go to the town of Gwangju for the day. They arrive to find a city under siege by the military government, with the citizens, led by a determined group of college students, rising up to demand freedom. What began as an easy fare became a life-or-death struggle in the midst of the Gwangju Uprising, a critical event in modern South Korea.

"English Vinglish" 

"English Vinglish” (2012) is an Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film about a quiet, sweet-tempered housewife who endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter daily due to her inability to speak and understand English proficiently. Determined to overcome this insecurity, she enrolls in an English course, masters the language, and gains self-confidence in the process.

Set during the Philippine-American War, “Heneral Luna” (2015) follows the life of Philippine soldier, General Antonio Luna, as he tries to lead his countrymen against colonial masters new and old, and rise above their own raging disputes to fulfill the promise of the Philippine Revolution.
