Andrea Shimizu: Work Hard, Play Nice
Scopely may not be a name that immediately comes to mind, but if you spend any amount of time playing games on your cell phone, you may be playing some of their games. Some of Scopely's most popular apps include Dice with Ellen, Wheel of Fortune, The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, and WWE Champions.
Andrea spent a number of years working in recruiting at Scopely before taking on her new role at Thrive Market. At Scopely, she helped coordinate the positions for every person who joined the company (C-suite, VP, Entry level).
Andrea says the culture is what kept her there day in and day out. Her colleagues genuinely wanted to be there and contribute. Scopely has initiatives to keep employees happy including happy hours and an annual retreat where employees get to enjoy hanging out together.
At LMU, Andrea majored in business with a focus on finance. She feels that she gained much of her skills from class case studies and group projects. She felt like she was doing real life projects, and uses the knowledge today, especially when gaining an understanding of what large corporations do differently. She also noted that extracurricular activities helped her communications skills with classmates and professors. When reflecting on her experience, she gushed, “I truly love LMU and would not have wanted to go anywhere else!”
She is a great example of what hard work and taking advantage of skills developed in school can do. Oh, and it helps to be nice along the way.
