Faculty Engagements

 

  • Dr. Mahmoud Nourayi participated in a panel presentation discussing the educational requirements and MS Accounting for the CPA Licensure in California at the Western Region American Accounting Association meeting April 19-21 in Vancouver, WA. He also participated in a roundtable discussion with members of the academy and the accounting profession regarding the 150 unit requirement and challenges the profession faces with respect to the new licensure rules during the California Society of CPAs’ Accounting Education Committee meeting in San Francisco.
  • On March 13Dr. Charles Vance gave a presentation entitled “Preparing for Your Success in the Global Marketplace” to the 2012 Saga Delegation, a group of nine Japanese students making a 12-day tour of businesses and universities in Southern California and the Bay Area. Following the presentation, the students also attended Dr. Vance’s management skills class, which focused on employee training. The purpose of the Saga Delegation is to provide Japanese university students an opportunity to visit the U.S. and develop an entrepreneurial perspective to realize their dreams within the global marketplace.
  • Dr. Mahmoud Nourayi co-authored a paper titled "Firm Profitability: Mean-Reverting or Random-Walk Behavior?" that was presented at the Eastern Economic Association in Boston in March 2012
  • Dr. Mahmoud Nourayi presented “The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008: Troubled Asset Relief Program,” at the November 2011 meeting of the Institute of Management Accountants in Torrance, California, during the November 2011 meeting of the South Bay Chapter. 
  • Professors Mahmoud NourayiLarry Kalbers and Frank Daroca completed a research article entitled “The Impact of Corporate Governance and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on CEO Compensation,” that was presented at the American Accounting Association August 2011 Annual Meeting in Denver and the 2011 meeting of the Western Regional Meeting of American Accounting Association in Newport Beach.
  • The ECOA has appointed Dr. Thomas White to oversee their inaugural “Ethics School,” a new online program that consists of seven weekly sessions that touch on various theoretical and practical aspects of corporate ethics. Dr. White will be responsible for designing and managing the program, selecting the faculty and facilitating one or two of the sessions. The ECOA has also invited Dr. White to teach its “Managing Ethics in Organizations” course again next spring.
  • Thomas White, Ph.D.,  has several speaking engagements booked this year, including: Completing another session on corporate ethics programs for NPR’s Economic Training Workshop. In March 2010 , Dr. White will be giving a presentation at the Oxford Round Table; the topic this year is “Ethics and the World Financial Crisis.”  His presentation will focus on why the business ethics/corporate ethics movement in the U.S. hasn’t been more successful. Dr. White has also been invited by the Director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics to give presentations on his research on interspecies ethics to the Oxford University Animal Ethics Society and at St. Stephen’s House. He has been asked to participate in a special meeting about the upcoming forum of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics devoted to discussing how to foster discussion of research ideas and teaching methods in business ethics at APPE.
  • Dr. Mahmoud Nourayi   gave a presentation entitled “Financial Crises: Causes and Consequences” in November 2009 to the members of Institute of Management Accountants during the organization's monthly meeting.
  • David Choi, Ph.D., will be giving a keynote speech at the Social Entrepreneurship Symposium held by Chung Ang University in Seoul, Korea on November 20, 2009.   It is sponsored by GEW Korea 2009 and SK (a Korean conglomerate interested in social businesses). gave a presentation entitled “Financial Crises: Causes and Consequences” to the members of Institute of Management Accountants during the monthly meeting of this organization.
  • Dr. Mahmoud Nourayi  gave a presentation entitled “US Economy: Institutional and Historical Perspectives” to the members of the Institute of Management Accountants on Oct. 28, 2009.

  • Prof. Charlie Vance will present papers at several conference this summer:
    June 21-24. “Key Components of the Host Country Workforce Liaison Role in Effective Knowledge Management in Multinational Corporations” at the 10 th International Human Resource Management Conference in Santa Fe.
    June 27-30. “A Distance-Based Field Learning Approach to Enhancing International Business Learning Outcomes in Study Abroad” at the Annual Conference of the Academy of International Business in San Diego.
    Aug. 7-11. “Toward a Multidimensional Framework of Nonlinear Thinking Style,” at the Annual Conference of the Academy of Management in Chicago.
  • Prof. Gary Sibeck will present a paper about the lawsuit of the Dole Food Company in Central America at the Pacific Southwest Academy of Business Law 's annual meeting. The meeting will take place Feb. 19 - 21, 2010 , in Palm Springs.
