"4 Wedding Planners" (2011)

In the kooky romantic comedy "4 Wedding Planners," matriarch Miriam (Illeana Douglas) is three times divorced, with one daughter born from each husband. When eldest daughter, Lily (Kimberly Rose-Wolter), rejects her own boyfriend’s marriage proposal, she returns to her home in Hawaii, and her family’s wedding planning business. What ensues is a recipe for comical family strife as the daughters finally reach the breaking point of addressing feelings repressed thanks to mom’s poor choices in men.

"My Neighbor Totoro" (
1988)

This superbly animated children's tale is directed by Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan's most beloved animators. The story follows Satsuke and Mei, two young girls who find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of mystical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O Totoro, the biggest and eldest Totoro, who is also the king of the forest. As their girls' mother lies sick in the hospital, O Totoro brings the sisters on a magical adventure but also helps them to understand the realities of life. Like most films released by Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, this family-oriented feature has a powerful ecological theme. The English-language version of this film wasn't dubbed until many years later, explaining the presence of actors such as Dakota Fanning in the cast (who wasn't even born until 1994).

"Hang Loose" (2012)

YouTuber KevJumba (aka Kevin Wu) and actor Dante Basco star in the indie film "Hang Loose." In his feature film debut, Kevin Wu plays a newly single high school grad who flies out to Hawaii to attend his older sister’s wedding. While there, he meets his future brother-in-law, Dante, and his groomsmen. Kevin joins Dante’s bachelor party for a night of revelry on the islands, leading to craziness that rivals "The Hangover" and "Harold and Kumar" films.

"UPLOADED: THE ASIAN AMERICAN MOVEMENT" (2012)

UPLOADED: THE ASIAN AMERICAN MOVEMENT is not a history of Asian Pacific American activist history. Far from it. Conceived and created by a team of recent graduates of UC San Diego and headed by up-and-coming young director Kane Diep, UPLOADED is a product of, and celebration of, the generation of new media artists and activists that have sprung up in the age of social media and YouTube. The roots of this movement, as seen in this film, go far deeper than simply a mass migration to YouTube. In the process, the netizens who have staked a claim to this new online environment share stories that betray a struggle with acculturation that eerily mirrors identity issues in the real world.
