Center for Asian Business at CBA Committed to Continuing to Bridge East and West

The work of College of Business Administration students can be seen through their travel, study, and service. One student who personifies this is Britney Holland, a business major  in her senior year at Loyola Marymount University.

Each year, the Center for Asian Business offers four scholarships to LMU students — campuswide — to visit South Korea as part of a two-week summer cultural experience. Daly Scholarship recipients live with a Korean host family, learn about Asian business practices, visit temples, factories, markets, and other cultural and historical sites.

The visits are hosted by Sogang University, a sister Jesuit university in Seoul that was founded in 1960 by Jesuits from the Wisconsin Province. The scholarships were established by Theresa Y. Shim, former associate director of the Center for Asian Business at LMU and named after John Daly, S.J., who served for many years as president of Sogang University.

Holland, who is a U.S. Army veteran and served in Iraq, has been on the dean’s list since 2008. She was one of the four students by the Center for Asian Business for the two-week cultural exchange program.

“The most important advice I can share with students about the program is to apply,” said Holland. “It’s open to all LMU students and it’s not just a business experience, it’s a cultural one. What you get from it is more than you can imagine and the experience is applicable to many different careers and programs.”

Sogang faculty and alumni and others have contributed to the endowment for the scholarships to foster the study of Korean culture and history to promote understanding by mainstream Americans.

The other 2009 scholarship winners were: film production major Justin Yngelmo, a junior in the School of Film and Television; Marie Webb, a senior music major in the College of Communication and Fine Arts; and Grant Miller, a sophomore studying intercultural communications in the College of Communication and Fine Arts.
