2011 April Schedule

FIRST LMU ROUND

Monday, April 11

6 PM Topic: Blue Shield of California originally to increase its rate by up to 59%, but then agreed to keep rates where they are. The team is examining whether the increases are appropriate and how the company should respond to the negative public reaction.

Wednesday, April 13

3:00 PM Topic: Presentation on the ethics of open source, which is a method of downloading products for free online on the internet. This practice is most commonly known by its most popular method, torrenting (or peer to peer sharing).

4:30 PM Topic: The team will discuss a variety of concerns they have with the “awake” plastic surgeries taught by the American Academy of Cosmetic Gynecologists.

6 PM Topic: Captivity of elephants by an entertainment facility (fictional). Should SeaWorld expand its operation to include captive elephants? (The team decided they wanted to examine the issue of the acceptability of captive elephants. I suggested that a good way to combine the legal, financial and ethical issues was to imagine that an existing operation, e.g., SeaWorld, was considering adding elephants to its operation.)

Thursday, April 14

7:30 PM Topic: Privacy issues connected with Facebook (actual website). Are users appropriately notified about the nature and amount of information collected about them by Facebook?

Note: Because of the nature of this presentation, it would help if judges already used Facebook themselves.

Friday, April 15

1:30 PM Topic: Is it safe and appropriate for Colgate to use the chemical Triclosan in two types of toothpaste they manufacture?

3 PM Topic: Feasibility of www.openleaks.org (actual website). The organization describes itself as: “OpenLeaks is a project that aims at making whistleblowing safer and more widespread. This will be done by providing dedicated and generally free services to whistleblowers and organizations interested in transparency. We will also create a Knowledge Base aiming to provide a comprehensive reference to all areas surrounding whistleblowing.” The team is exploring the legal, financial and ethical feasibility of such an operation.
